SRM Medical College Hospital & Research Centre, Kattankulathur Successfully Manages Rare High-Risk Pregnancy Complicated by Liver Tumour

Chennai, May 2026: Doctors at SRM Medical College Hospital & Research Centre successfully managed a rare and extremely high-risk pregnancy complicated by a hepatic tumour, demonstrating the institution’s expertise in multidisciplinary maternal and fetal care.

The patient, a young pregnant woman in her eight months of pregnancy, was referred to SRM Medical College Hospital & Research Centre with vague abdominal complaints and a liver-tumour approximately 9 -10 cm detected during pregnancy. Detailed evaluation by the specialist team revealed a rare and challenging clinical scenario requiring urgent expert intervention.

The presence of a large hepatic tumour carried a significant risk of spontaneous rupture during pregnancy, which could have resulted in catastrophic bleeding, maternal collapse, and even maternal mortality. In view of this grave risk, an emergency lower segment caesarean section (LSCS) was performed successfully at 30 weeks of gestation under close multidisciplinary supervision. The patient delivered a healthy female baby, was kept under specialized neonatal care.

One week after the surgical delivery, the patient successfully underwent a major liver surgery, Left Lateral Sectionectomy of the liver by the Surgical Gastroenterology team. The patient showed steady postoperative recovery under expert supervision.

The successful outcome highlights the strength of coordinated multidisciplinary teamwork and advanced tertiary care facilities available at SRM Medical College Hospital & Research Centre and SRM Global hospital. The institution continues to provide comprehensive care for complex maternal and fetal conditions, including rare and high-risk pregnancies.

Statement from the Dean, Dr R Jayanthi and treating Team

This was an exceptionally challenging case involving significant maternal and fetal risks. Timely diagnosis, meticulous planning, and coordinated multidisciplinary management helped achieve a positive outcome for both mother and baby. Such cases emphasize the importance of advanced tertiary care support in managing rare obstetric emergencies. The successful management involved a dedicated multidisciplinary team from the Departments of Obstetrics & Gynaecology (Dr Sajeetha Kumari R, Dr M Anuradha, Dr Maitrayee Sen), Surgical Gastroenterology (Dr O L Naganath Babu, Dr Karikal Chakaravarthi R), Anaesthesia & Critical Care (Dr Gayathri B, Dr C K Swetha Ramani, Dr Varun), Radiology (Dr Senthil Kumar), and Neonatology (Dr Ashok C), with strong support and guidance from the administrative leadership including the Dean, Prof Dr Jayanthi, the Medical Superintendent, Dr Venkatraman and V P Chandrasekaran, COO and the Hospital Management.”
