Madras High Court Directs Sai University to Furnish Bank Guarantee in Vendor Payment Dispute
Chennai: Sai University has come under judicial scrutiny after the Madras High Court directed the institution to furnish a bank guarantee before mediation could proceed in a dispute concerning unpaid dues to a local Tamil Nadu based food services vendor. The dispute relates to payments allegedly owed for food supplied to students. According to the court proceedings, the vendor contended that although food charges had been collected from students, payments remained outstanding for several months. Taking note of the matter, the High Court directed that mediation would proceed only after the university furnished a bank guarantee securing the disputed amount. The case has brought renewed attention to governance practices at the university, which has previously faced controversy over issues relating to land acquisition. The latest proceedings suggest that questions surrounding institutional governance continue to attract public and judicial attention. The existing catering contract was subsequently terminated, with the food services reportedly being awarded to Compass Group, a British multinational food services company. The matter has also drawn attention within the food services industry, where concerns have been raised over the financial impact that delayed payments can have on local suppliers. Reports indicate that certain vendors and logistics providers had earlier protested over alleged payment delays. Representatives of the university could not be reached for comment. Governance Under the Spotlight The case has once again highlighted the importance of governance standards in India’s higher education sector. Universities are expected to uphold the highest standards of transparency, financial discipline and ethical conduct, given the trust reposed in them by students, parents, employees and business partners. As India seeks to build globally respected educational institutions, governance must become as important as academic excellence. Timely honouring of contractual obligations, responsible financial management and institutional accountability are essential to preserving confidence in the country’s education system and ensuring that universities remain exemplars of integrity rather than subjects of avoidable legal disputes.
